Todra Gorge Guide: Morocco’s Most Dramatic Canyon (2026)

Todra Gorge — Todra Gorge Guide: Morocco's Most Dramatic Ca

The Todra Gorge is Morocco’s most spectacular canyon — a slot in the High Atlas where the Todra River has cut a 300-metre-deep gorge just 10 metres wide at its narrowest point. The scale is vertiginous, the rock a deep terracotta red, and in morning light the canyon floor fills with a diffuse gold glow that makes it one of the most photographed places in North Africa. Here’s the complete guide.

The Gorge: What to Expect

The main section of the gorge — the “grand canyon” — is 600m long, with walls ranging from 150m to 300m high and a width of 10–40m. The Todra River still runs through the floor (reduced to a trickle in summer, a rushing stream in spring). A paved road runs through the gorge, allowing vehicles to pass, but the experience is walking the floor and looking up.

The gorge opens in two 15-minute bursts of direct sunlight: one hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset. At these moments the orange walls glow and the Morocco desert photography guide is extraordinary. The rest of the day, the canyon floor is in deep shade — still dramatic, but different.

Best Time to Visit Todra Gorge

  • Sunrise (best): Arrive at 07:30–08:00 for the first light on the east-facing walls. Almost no visitors.
  • Golden hour evening: 16:30–18:00 — the west walls light up as the sun drops
  • Avoid 10:00–15:00: Tour buses fill the car park and the canyon floor. No photography light anyway.
  • Best months: March–May (green, flowing river) and September–November (clear skies, warm). Avoid August (crowded, too hot).

Things to Do at Todra Gorge

Walk the Canyon Floor

The main 600m walk through the narrowest section takes 20–30 minutes at a photography pace. The canyon opens at both ends into wider rock amphitheatres. Total return walk: 1.5km, 45 minutes. No guide needed for the main section.

Hike Beyond the Gorge

A more serious hike continues beyond the main gorge section into the upper canyon — a 4–6 hour circuit through Berber villages, walnut groves, and increasingly remote terrain. A local guide ($30–40) is recommended. The Tinerhir to Ait Hani circuit (full day, 18km) is the most rewarding hiking option — ask at the gorge hotels for guides.

Rock Climbing

Todra is one of North Africa’s premier sport climbing destinations. The limestone walls have over 150 bolted routes graded from 5a to 8b. Several local guides offer climbing instruction ($50–80/day with equipment). The main climbing area is the section immediately after the gorge entrance on the left wall.

Swimming

In spring and early summer, the Todra River forms pools at the gorge entrance — cold, clear, and surrounded by tamarisk trees. Swimming is possible (but chilly) from March to June. By July the water reduces significantly.

Where to Stay Near Todra Gorge

Most accommodation is in Tinghir (15km south) or at the gorge entrance itself:

  • Hotel Yasmina: Right at the gorge entrance, basic rooms, gorge-view terrace, $30–50/night
  • Dar M’Sahaba: Berber-run guesthouse in the gorge, 10 rooms, excellent home cooking, $45–65/night
  • Kasbah Panorama: Tinghir, pool and panoramic views, $80–120/night

How to Get to Todra Gorge

  • From Marrakech: 6–7 hours by car via Ouarzazate, Boumalne, or via the P1509. Most tours combine with Dadès Gorge and Merzouga.
  • From Merzouga: 2.5 hours west via Tinghir. An excellent addition to any Merzouga desert stay.
  • Public transport: Bus to Tinghir from Ouarzazate or Errachidia, then shared taxi (grand taxi) to the gorge.

Todra Gorge vs Dadès Gorge

Todra Gorge Dades Gorge
Wall height Up to 300m Up to 200m
Canyon width 10m at narrowest 50m+
Drama factor Higher Broader scenery
Hiking Excellent Excellent
Rock climbing Yes (150+ routes) Limited
Visit time needed 2–4 hours Half day to full day

Most tours include both — they’re 90 minutes apart via the Tinghir road. The classic sequence is: overnight in Dadès Gorge, morning walk, then drive to Todra for midday before continuing to Merzouga.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Todra Gorge worth visiting?

Yes — it’s one of the most dramatic landscapes in North Africa. If you’re doing a Marrakech-Sahara tour and have an extra half-day, the detour via Todra adds immeasurably to the experience. The gorge at sunrise is unforgettable.

Can I visit Todra Gorge without a guide?

The main gorge walk requires no guide. For hikes beyond the main section, a local guide is recommended for navigation and to visit Berber villages along the route.
