Marrakech airport — Marrakech Airport Guide: Arrivals, Transfers

This complete guide to Marrakech airport covers everything you need to know: The complete Marrakech airport guide — what to do on arrival, how to get to the medina, and which transfer not to take.

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is the main entry point for Morocco’s most-visited city — and the first 20 minutes after landing set the tone for your Morocco experience. Here’s exactly what to expect and how to navigate it smoothly.

Marrakech Menara Airport: Overview

Menara Airport is 6km southwest of Marrakech city centre and 5km from the medina. It handles over 8 million passengers annually — primarily European charter and low-cost flights. There is one main terminal building with arrivals on the ground floor and departures on the first floor. The airport is modern, clean, and manageable — nothing like the chaos of some regional airports.

Arriving in Marrakech: Step by Step

1. Passport Control

EU, UK, US, Canadian, and Australian passport holders enter Morocco visa-free for up to 90 days. Fill in the arrival card on the plane (distributed by crew) — name, passport number, date of birth, address in Morocco (write your Morocco riad guide‘s name and address), purpose of visit (tourism). Queues at passport control can be 20–40 minutes during peak arrival times (summer afternoons, Christmas period).

2. Baggage Claim

One main baggage hall — carousels are well-signed. Lost luggage desk is on the left side of the hall if needed. Allow 20–30 minutes from landing to exiting the terminal.

3. SIM Card

Buy a local SIM immediately upon arrival — there’s a Maroc Telecom kiosk in the arrivals hall (before the exit). Maroc Telecom is Morocco’s most reliable network, with the best coverage in mountain and desert areas. A tourist SIM with 10GB data costs $5. This is the single most valuable thing you can buy on arrival — offline maps, translation apps, and WhatsApp for your riad all require data.

4. Currency Exchange

There is a Banque Populaire currency exchange desk in the arrivals hall — exchange rates are reasonable (not the worst airport rate in the world). Alternatively, there are ATMs (several, Banque Populaire and BMCE) in the arrivals area. Withdraw dirhams directly — the rate is better than exchange desks. Maximum ATM withdrawal: typically 2,000–4,000 MAD per transaction.

Getting from the Airport to Marrakech Medina

Option 1: Pre-Booked Private Transfer (Recommended)

Arrange your riad or a reputable transfer service to meet you at arrivals. Cost: $15–25 for a private car to the medina. Your driver holds a sign with your name. No negotiation, no stress, no scam risk. This is the option we recommend to all Desert Tripper clients — contact us to arrange airport pickup.

Option 2: Official Airport Taxi

The official airport taxis (beige/cream coloured) are metered and regulated. The fixed rate to the city centre is approximately 70–90 MAD ($7–9). These are in the taxi rank immediately outside the terminal — not the men who approach you inside. Do not go with anyone who approaches you inside the terminal claiming to be a taxi driver.

Option 3: Bus (Line 19)

Marrakech bus line 19 connects the airport to the city centre (Marrakech 3-day itinerary area) — cost: 4 MAD (40 cents), journey time 20–30 minutes depending on traffic. The bus stop is to the left as you exit the terminal. Runs approximately every 20–30 minutes. Fine for budget travellers without heavy luggage.

What to Avoid: The Unofficial Taxi Tout

Inside the arrivals hall, men in unofficial capacity will offer you “taxi to medina.” These are not official taxis. Prices quoted are typically $30–50, vehicles are unregistered, and journeys sometimes involve detours to commission shops. If someone approaches you inside the terminal, politely decline and proceed to the official taxi rank outside.

Airport Facilities

  • Wi-Fi: Free, reliable in the terminal
  • Cafés and restaurants: Arrivals level has a café (overpriced but functional); departure lounge has a broader selection
  • Left luggage: Available for a fee (useful if arriving before riad check-in time)
  • Car rental: Hertz, Avis, Europcar, and local companies all have desks in arrivals
  • Tourist information: ONMT desk in arrivals has maps and brochures (limited English material)

Departing Marrakech

Allow 2.5 hours before departure for international flights. Marrakech airport has become notably busier — security queues can be 30–45 minutes in peak season. The departure lounge has adequate cafés and a duty-free area (good prices on argan oil, Moroccan tea sets, and handicrafts — last chance to buy if you forgot).

Check-in for most carriers opens 3 hours before departure. Online check-in (where available) is strongly recommended — it does not save time in the queue but ensures you have a boarding pass if the check-in desk queue is long.

Frequently Asked Questions: Marrakech Airport

How far is Marrakech airport from the medina?

Is there a direct bus from Marrakech airport to the Sahara?

No direct service. From Marrakech you need a private car or CTM bus to Ouarzazate, then onward to best Merzouga desert camps (total: 7–8 hours). For a private transfer from the airport directly to a Sahara tour, contact Desert Tripper — we arrange airport pickup with same-day departure for desert tours.
