This complete guide to Morocco 7 day itinerary covers everything you need to know: The perfect one-week Morocco itinerary — Marrakech, Sahara, and back. Day-by-day, no filler.
One week is the most popular Morocco trip length — and it’s exactly enough time to experience the country’s three defining landscapes: the imperial medinas, the High Atlas, and the Marrakech to Sahara desert tour. This is the itinerary our guides have refined over a decade of running private tours. No filler, no wasted days.
The Route Overview
Marrakech (2 nights) → Atlas Mountains day trip → Ait Ben Haddou → Dadès Gorge → Todra Gorge → Merzouga Sahara (2 nights) → return to Marrakech or fly from Fes
Best for: First-time Morocco visitors | Pace: Comfortable, not rushed | Tour type: Private 4×4 recommended
Day 1: Arrive Marrakech
Arrive at Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK). Most European flights land midday — perfect for an afternoon in the medina. Check into your riad in the medina or Gueliz. Evening: walk to Jemaa el-Fna as the night market fills — snake charmers, Gnawa musicians, and 50 food stalls serving everything from snail soup to mechoui lamb. Eat here. Have mint tea on a rooftop café overlooking the spectacle.
Where to stay: Riad BE Marrakech (boutique, $120–180/night) or Riad Dar Anika (luxury, $250–400/night)
Day 2: Marrakech — Souks, Palaces, Gardens
Full day in the medina. Morning: Medersa Ben Youssef (the finest Islamic architecture in the city), then lose yourself in the souks — leather, spices, metalwork, textiles. Lunch at Café des Épices. Afternoon: Bahia Palace (30 min, $4) then Majorelle Garden at 15:30 when crowds thin. Evening: hammam at Les Bains de Marrakech or dinner at Dar Moha.
Day 3: Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Dadès Gorge
Depart 08:00 by private 4×4. Cross the High Atlas via Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260m) — dramatic switchbacks and Atlas Berber villages. Stop at the viewpoint for photos. Descend to Ait Ben Haddou — the UNESCO kasbah used in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. 90-minute explore, lunch in the village. Continue to the Dadès Gorge for overnight. The drive through the Valley of Roses (Kalaat M’Gouna) and past ancient ksour is one of Morocco’s best.
Overnight: Dadès Gorge guesthouse with gorge-view terrace ($50–90)
Day 4: Todra Gorge → Merzouga
Morning: Todra Gorge — a 300m vertical rock canyon, 10m wide at its narrowest. Walk the floor of the gorge at 08:00 before tour buses arrive. The light in the morning is extraordinary. Continue east through the Saharan steppe — flat, vast, and increasingly otherworldly — to Merzouga. Arrive early afternoon for free time before the main event.
At 17:00: camel trekking guide into Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chigaga. 45 minutes to your best desert camps in Merzouga. Sunset from the dunes, traditional Berber dinner, live music around the fire. Sleep in a furnished tent under more stars than you’ve ever seen.
Day 5: Sahara → Fes Road
Wake before sunrise. Watch the dawn from the dunes — the light turns the sand from purple to orange to gold in 20 minutes. Camel back to camp, breakfast, then depart for the north. The route to Fes via Midelt and the Ziz Valley passes through a completely different Morocco: cedar forests, the Alpine town of Ifrane, and the extraordinary palm-canyon of the Ziz Valley. Overnight in Midelt or push to Fes (5 more hours).
Day 6: Fes — The Medieval City
Fes el-Bali is the largest car-free urban area in the world and the best-preserved medieval city anywhere. Spend the full day with a licensed guide — non-negotiable in a medina of 9,400 streets. Highlights: Chouara tanneries (the leather dyeing pits, best viewed from the terraces above), Al-Attarine Madrasa, the Andalusian Quarter, and the blue-tiled Nejjarine Fountain. Lunch at a medina riad restaurant. Evening: bastilla (the famous pigeon pie) at Restaurant Nur or Riad Rcif.
Where to stay: Riad Laaroussa (boutique, $150–250) or Riad Fes (luxury, $300+)
Day 7: Fes → Depart (or Chefchaouen Extension)
Fly home from Fes-Saiss Airport (FEZ) — direct flights to most European cities. Or: add a night in Chefchaouen (3 hours from Fes) — Morocco’s famously blue-painted mountain town. Worth the extension if your schedule allows. See our full Chefchaouen guide.

Frequently Asked Questions: Morocco 7 Day Itinerary
Is 7 days enough for Morocco?
Seven days covers the essential Morocco — Marrakech, Sahara, and Fes — at a comfortable pace. For a deeper trip including Chefchaouen, Essaouira, and the southern oases, 10–14 days is ideal. See our 10 and 14-day itineraries.
Should I do a private or group tour for 7 days?
For the Marrakech-Sahara-Fes route, a private tour gives you complete flexibility on stops, timing, and pace — essential when you want to photograph Todra Gorge at sunrise or spend 2 hours at Ait Ben Haddou rather than 20 minutes. See the full comparison: private vs group tours Morocco.
When is the best time for this itinerary?
March–May and September–November. The Sahara is comfortable (28–33°C by day, cool nights) and the mountain passes are open. Avoid July–August for the desert section. Full guide: best time to visit Morocco.
