The Fes to Merzouga route is the less-travelled alternative to the classic Marrakech-Sahara tour — and many desert veterans say it’s the better journey. It passes through an entirely different Morocco: the Middle Atlas cedar forests, the mountain town of Ifrane (called “Morocco’s Switzerland”), the date-palm canyons of the Ziz Valley, and the palm-shaded oasis of Erfoud before hitting the Sahara dunes. 2-Day Fes to Merzouga Itinerary
Day 1: Fes → Middle Atlas → Midelt
Depart Fes by 08:00. The first stop is Azrou — a Berber mountain town in the cedar forest where wild Barbary macaques live in the trees along the roadside. Stop for 30 minutes: the monkeys approach and will eat from your hand (bring nuts from Fes).
Continue to Ifrane — the most disorienting 10 minutes in Morocco. Built by the French in Alpine style in 1929, Ifrane has chalet-style buildings, flower boxes, manicured lawns, and a ski resort. At 1,650m, it’s the highest city in Morocco. Worth a 45-minute walk and lunch at the lake.
Afternoon descent into the Ziz Valley — a 200km palm grove canyon running north to south. The viewpoint above the gorge (before the Tunnel du Légionnaire) gives you the most dramatic valley panorama in Morocco. The road winds through the canyon, past ancient ksour (fortified villages) and date palm plantations. Overnight in Midelt or Erfoud.
Day 2: Erfoud → Merzouga → Desert Camp
Morning at Erfoud — the “fossil capital” of Morocco. The local stone is loaded with 350-million-year-old marine fossils from when the Sahara was a sea. The fossil workshops (genuine craftwork, not tourist traps) are worth 30 minutes.
Continue to Merzouga. 3-Day Fes to Merzouga Extension
Adding a third day allows:
- Longer time in the Ziz Valley — including side trips to Goulmima and ancient ksour

- Continuation to Marrakech via Dadès and Draa Valley instead of retracing
